MY 9/11 STORY
By Bill Cancel
September 11, 2001.
For most Americans, it is a day remembered through television images, photographs, documentaries and history books.
For Bill Cancel, it is also a collection of personal memories.
In this very personal episode, Bill recounts his experiences on September 11, 2001, and in the days that followed—what he saw, what he felt, what people around him experienced, and the moments that have remained with him for 25 years.
But this isn’t only a story about tragedy.
It’s a story about what happened afterward.
For a brief moment, something extraordinary happened across America.
Strangers helped strangers.
Neighbors checked on neighbors.
Political differences suddenly seemed insignificant.
We weren’t Democrats or Republicans.
We weren’t red states or blue states.
We were Americans.
Twenty-five years later, America feels very different.
We argue. We divide ourselves into camps. We question one another’s motives. Too often, we treat fellow Americans as enemies simply because they see the world differently.
So Bill asks a simple question:
HOW DO WE FIND OUR WAY BACK TO EACH OTHER?
We should never need another tragedy to remember that our common humanity is greater than our differences.
This is Bill Cancel’s 9/11 story.
A story of fear.
A story of loss.
A story of compassion.
A story of unity.
And ultimately, a reminder of something America desperately needs to rediscover:
WE ARE STRONGER TOGETHER.
